Lahore (30 August 2025): Authorities have confirmed that Lahore, Pakistan’s second-largest city, is now safe from the immediate threat of flooding. While the situation in Lahore has stabilized, several other districts of Punjab remain under high alert due to rising river levels.
Situation in Punjab
According to PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia, the flood risk in Shahdara has eased. However, Kasur continues to face serious danger from the surge in the Sutlej River.
To protect the city, officials took the critical step of breaching the Rahimyar embankment, diverting water to prevent further damage.
Damage in Lahore’s Housing Areas
On Thursday night, floodwaters from the Ravi River entered Park View Housing Society, submerging several blocks. Homes, furniture, and appliances were damaged by the sudden surge.
Housing scheme management assured residents that compensation and emergency support will be provided immediately. Rescue teams remain active in the area to safeguard lives and property.
Sindh on High Alert
As floodwaters flow downstream, Sindh is preparing for potential flooding. Sindh Irrigation Minister Jam Khan Shoro stated that people living in Katcha areas have been placed on high alert.
He further emphasized that breaching embankments is not an option in Sindh, as authorities are focusing on strengthening protective measures.
Rising Death Toll Across Pakistan
The recent wave of flooding has caused 28 deaths nationwide, including 13 fatalities reported in Punjab on Friday alone.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has warned of extremely high water levels in the Indus River, with expected flows reaching up to 1.2 million cusecs.
Between September 3 and 4, water levels at Panjnad Headworks could rise to 900,000–950,000 cusecs, posing significant risks if embankments fail or diversions occur.
Large-Scale Rescue Operations
Punjab has launched one of the biggest rescue and relief operations in recent years. Over one million residents have been affected by floods across the province.
Authorities have evacuated hundreds of thousands of people to safer zones, while emergency teams are working around the clock to provide food, shelter, and medical care.
