Pakistan has received a major energy boost after Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) confirmed a fresh oil and gas discovery in the Dhok Sultan-03 well located in District Attock, Punjab.
The discovery, made in collaboration with Government Holdings Private Limited (GHPL), is being hailed as a milestone for the country’s energy sector. Officials say it is among the deepest oil finds in the Potwar region, highlighting the potential of Pakistan’s underexplored reserves.
Details of the Discovery
According to PPL’s statement, drilling of the Dhok Sultan-03 well began in January 2025 and reached a depth of 5,815 meters. The test results were highly promising:
-
Oil production capacity: Up to 2,113 barrels per day
-
Gas production capacity: Up to 4.13 MMscfd (million standard cubic feet per day)
-
Multiple formations tested, including Patala and Lockhart reservoirs
These results confirm the strong hydrocarbon potential of the region, achieved through advanced drilling designs and cost optimization.
Why It Matters for Pakistan
This new discovery is expected to:
-
Add fresh oil and gas reserves to Pakistan’s energy mix.
-
Help reduce reliance on costly fuel imports.
-
Save foreign exchange by producing more energy locally.
-
Support long-term energy security in the country.
Energy experts believe that such breakthroughs are crucial for reducing the gap between Pakistan’s growing demand and limited supply of oil and gas.
Official Statement
PPL’s Managing Director and CEO, Imran Abbasy, said the discovery is a clear reflection of the company’s expertise and persistence.
“This achievement not only strengthens our reserves but also contributes to Pakistan’s self-sufficiency by reducing dependence on imported energy,” he stated.
Looking Ahead
The discovery at Dhok Sultan-03 marks the second success in this block and demonstrates that Pakistan still holds significant untapped hydrocarbon reserves. PPL has reaffirmed its commitment to continue exploration using sustainable and responsible practices.
For Pakistan, this is more than just a discovery—it’s a step toward energy independence and a relief for the economy in the face of rising global fuel prices.
